Episode Title: Underdogs

The McCoy storyline didn’t play out the way it should have—there was way too much Taylor and too little McCoy in this episode. We’ve spent much of the season with the McCoys, learning about them and watching their family conflict build, but now that the big explosion took place, we don’t get to see how they’re dealing with it? Also, bummer that Tami and Katie are no longer friends.

On the plus side, Jeremy Sumpter was awesome in the confrontation scene with Coach Taylor in his office. That was such a fabulous casting find on someone’s part… I’m so thrilled that they created and cast a character that I can conceivably care about the same way I care for Matt and Tim.

Lorraine Saracen’s selfishness is really working the nerves—that woman in real life might just incite me to elderly abuse. Still, her talk with Julie was exactly what needed to happen because they’re the two people with the most to lose if Matt goes to Chicago.

The outcome of the big game was a bit predictable, but that’s okay. Tami had it right with, “Well, you’re either gonna win. Or you’re gonna lose.” The Panthers won the last state championship (at least the last one we saw them play, because season two was cut short), and since there’s another episode after this one, logically they were going to lose and viewers are going to see the aftermath of that.

Finally, Tim laying his sneakers on the field really hammered home that this was Tim’s last game with the Panthers. I got a little sniffly... Tim may have been a notorious screw up, but Kitsch imbued his character with a comforting warmth that I’ll miss like hell next season.
