Writers: Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain
Grade: A
The much-touted sixth episode was pretty good, but I thought this was even better. The science was a little iffy, but I don’t watch Whedon’s shows for realistic science. I watch for character development and interaction, and for humor, and this episode had a great deal of both.
On the negative side, I found myself fast-forwarding through most of the Echo/Caroline scenes on my second viewing. They were informative the first time around, but there was no entertainment value to them, and thus no reason to watch again.
Topher and Adele’s interaction was interesting even before the drugs took effect, because she was sharing professional frustrations with him in a surprisingly casual and unprofessional way. I picked up something similar at the end with Laurence when she snapped at him for being too formal. Perhaps she prefers a casual social atmosphere in the workplace?
In any case, Fran Kranz and Olivia Williams hit this episode out of the park. The escalation of the drug’s effects was portrayed perfectly—and hilariously—by both actors. I never would have guessed that these two would have such great comedic chemistry together. It’s a little bittersweet, though, because I doubt we’ll see them interact so extensively again unless the show miraculously gets a second season.
