Writer: Scott Rosenbaum
Grade: B+
Another solid episode. I’m glad the writers were able to bring Jill back into the story without using the romance angle—the show has enough problems with romantic whiplash without adding some lame moment where Chuck and Jill almost kiss. I hope they weren’t even tempted to insert such a moment.
I was hoping Chuck’s rant about all the crap he’s done for the CIA would include a line about not getting paid for any of it, but no luck there. Again. I don’t understand why the writers won’t even address the issue in passing, because the idea that this guy would be out there working his ass off and risking his life without any monetary compensation is completely ridiculous. (Yes, the whole show is completely ridiculous, but still!)
I was also hoping that the “first kill” of the title would be more significant than a couple of accidental deaths and a running gag about “The Morgan.” I love Chuck to pieces, and it’s not that I want him to have a death on his conscience, but at the same time, he’s always disobeying Sarah and Casey, and there never seem to be any truly negative consequences for him. He gets to run around doing whatever he feels like, against the wishes of those who are there to protect him, and nothing bad ever comes of it. Gah, must remember it’s a fantasy…
I wonder if Sarah would have carried out Beckman’s orders if Chuck hadn’t given her a speech about how he’d been questioning whether he could trust her. It kind of seemed like she would have gone through with it, but I guess what happened happened.
