Yet another solid episode. I guess I should have noticed that the tomb storyline was picking up speed, but I wasn’t expecting them to open it until the season finale.
So Katherine manipulated her way into escaping the tomb, and left everyone else, including her friend Pearl, there to rot. Not only that, but she didn’t even bother saying goodbye to the Salvatore brothers or contacting them later. Good to know. I wonder how this new information will impact Damon’s character arc…
Anna really stepped up as a character I can genuinely like. I enjoyed hearing her say that most of the people she knows think Katherine’s a selfish bitch and want nothing to do with her—and this was before she told Damon what a twat Katherine was! I also loved Anna’s resilience. Stefan rescues Elena and Bonnie, Anna fumes for 30 seconds, then immediately comes up with a new plan: wait for the Salvatores to open the tomb, then use Jeremy for leverage to get in. Not only that, but Jeremy wasn’t even badly hurt, and I don’t think Anna would have let him be. She is an excellent bluffer, which is part of why I love her. People believe she’ll do really nasty things because she’s an unknown quantity to them, but she’s really kind of a softie.
Bummer about Grams, especially since she was the only decent parental figure on the show. Methinks Bonnie may end up blaming Elena for her death, although it was Bonnie’s decision to break the seal. I’m a little unclear on whether Bonnie wanted to rescue Stefan out of loyalty to him, or because she knew it would devastate Elena.
Other Stuff
-Did Damon really mean it when he told Stefan that he hoped Elena would die? I don’t think he would really want her gone permanently, because a) she looks like Katherine, and b) he seems to like her, but he probably wouldn’t mind her becoming a vampire. (And I’m soooo curious what Katherine was like before she was vamped and whether Elena would be just like her if she were turned.)
-Matt was kind of a douche. He really thought that Caroline trying to hold his hand in public one time was “clingy”? I hate PDA, and even I thought that was BS.
-So Jeremy’s researching vampires, eh? I’m glad he’s being proactive like his sister and figuring things out on his own, rather than rationalizing the evidence.
