We finally got to see just why Damon hates Stefan so much—he blames him for Katherine getting confined to the tomb. If Stefan had listened to Damon rather than try to plead the case for “good vampires” to Guiseppe, Katherine and her cohorts may have at least been able to get away. Also, remember that time that Stefan spiked Caroline’s drink with vervain, then Damon bit her and got sick? Now we know where Stefan got the idea. It’s like a little continuity Easter egg!
I enjoyed watching Stefan interrogate Alaric so calmly and carefully. He is far from reckless or impulsive; he won’t kill a human without a damn good reason. Instead, he probes for information, puts it together with what he already knows, gauges the threat, and tries to minimize it by telling Alaric to stay away from Damon. I also thought Stefan looked exceptionally upset and guilty after opening his father’s casket. Granted he was… opening his father’s casket, which is enough to upset most people, undead or not. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that his father was his first meal when he woke up as a vampire.
Finally, it was pretty hypocritical of Damon to bitch at Stefan for double-crossing him when he came to Giuseppe’s grave to do the exact same thing. I’m not sure I buy that Damon believed Elena, since I thought she was a pretty bad liar, but maybe that was a case of the acting not aligning with the writing. And as for that yearning expression on his face when he smelled Elena’s hair, I assumed that was about his longing for Katherine, not his attraction to Elena.
Other Stuff
-I’m really glad they addressed the fact that bartender Ben is a new vampire, as that was one of the questions I had leftover from the previous episode.
-My conjecture that Alaric came to Mystic Falls because his wife talked about it being a spooky place was right. Go me!
-I hope the writers aren’t setting up a parallel between Jonathan Gilbert/Pearl and Jeremy Gilbert/Anna. I adore Jeremy, and Anna has grown on me, so I hope their relationship can be a bit less tragic and star-crossed.
-Apparently both Salvatore brothers enjoy the culinary arts…
-Bonnie was pretty smooth covering her realization that Ben was a vampire. I thought the writers and Katerina Graham did a great job with that scene, making Bonnie look competent but getting caught anyway. It was a lot like Elena fighting back with the pencils and the mop handle in the previous episode—it didn’t work, but at least you can respect her for trying.
-Anna and Damon seemed equally matched in strength. Are they around the same age, or is she older, but they’re evenly matched because she’s so much smaller?
-We still don’t know exactly how the Salvatore brothers became vampires, so I assume we have more flashbacks on the way.
Quotes
Damon: “Oh, stop being smutty.”
Stefan: “Seriously, get out of here.”
Damon: “If I see something I’ve never seen before, I’ll throw a dollar at it.”
Ben: “Why did you choose me?”
Anna: “I needed someone in a position to be my eyes and ears. Small-time bartender fit the bill.”
Ben: “But there are plenty of bartenders to choose from. Why me?”
