The female friendships on the show have been a little neglected for the past three-ish episodes, so the scene between Elena and Bonnie was very welcome. The floating feathers were absolutely gorgeous in a visual sense, but the whole scene was also beautiful in its simplicity and gentleness. After all the recent horror, it was nice to see two people sharing in a sense of wonder. And after everything Elena’s seen and experienced over the past few weeks, I can completely believe her not being particularly shocked that Bonnie really is a witch.

I’ve already said that I think wiping Jeremy’s memory was a mistake, but it led to one of my favorite scenes of the series thus far. Damon says with great emphasis, “Elena, I took away his suffering.” Blink blink. Duh Elena. I love that he pretty much just repeats himself, and that plus his tone points out what an obvious truth he’s telling her. Such a wonderful scene: Elena is naïve, Damon is surprisingly wise in addition to being an evil murdering jackass (and perhaps also wistful that no one can take his own suffering away), and duh, Jeremy is still Jeremy.

As for Damon, he really is a piece of work. Talk about killing two birds with one stone—by killing Lexi, he managed to protect Stefan (and himself) and cut Stefan to the bone. To Damon’s credit, he didn’t look particularly thrilled when he told dying Lexi that her death was part of his plan.

I actually wonder if the Lexi storyline was a mistake. I can see the reasoning: they needed a way to divert suspicion from the Salvatores, bringing in another vamp to frame would be an easy way of doing that, and why not make her a good friend of Stefan’s in order to explore his character a bit more and cause additional conflict with Damon. The problem is that Lexi was more entertaining than Elena’s ever been, and Stefan completely lit up like a Christmas tree around her in a way that he doesn’t with Elena. (Granted I think the writers actually addressed that in Elena’s relationship talk with Lexi, so I give them credit for being aware of it, at least.) There’s also the fact that aside from Stefan giving Damon a painful wooden stake to the gut, Stefan seems to have put the whole mess behind him pretty quickly, which doesn’t really paint him in a positive light.

Finally, that scene between Matt and Caroline was unexpected but quite adorable. I had hoped Matt would get a non-Elena love interest and get the hell over her, but I couldn’t imagine who they could set him up with until this scene. I’m now totally on-board with the pairing. He already has too much responsibility on his shoulders and he just lost his sister, so someone sweet and gregarious like Caroline can only be good for him, and he’s already shown that he can be a positive, grounding force in her life just by being so blunt with her. I’m much more into that romantic possibility than the Elena/Stefan angst-fest, so I hope they get a decent amount of build-up and screen time. My one reservation, however, is that we could be getting Matt/Caroline because the writers have no clue what to do with Matt (seriously, he’s had barely anything to do all season), and he’ll end up being little more than Caroline’s nice boyfriend.

Miscellaneous Stuff

-Minor nitpick, but Mystic Falls is a small town, and thus I’d expect people to know that Caroline is the Sheriff’s daughter no matter what her fake ID says. In which case, what bartender would be stupid enough to serve her alcohol?!

Quotes

Caroline: “I’m totally sorry to do this, I know it’s so Indian-giver, and I know that we’re not even supposed to say that anymore, but I need my crystal back.”

Bonnie: “Why, you said you hated it?

Caroline: “Then I saw it on you and I realized how great it is. And I’ve got, like, three outfits I can coordinate it with, so—”

Bonnie: “I can’t give it back to you.”

Caroline: “Okay, well, I didn’t want to have to tell you this, but I’m your friend. When you wear it, it makes you look fat. There, I said it, but it’s because I’m your friend, so…”

Damon: “Does it get tiring, being so righteous?”

Elena: “It flares up in the presence of psychopaths.”

Elena: “When you did what you did to Jeremy’s memory of Vicki, what else did you do to him?”

Damon: “You asked me to take away his memory of fangs and rawr and all the bad stuff. You wanted me to take away his suffering.”

Elena: “But he’s acting different. He seems okay with everything, and a little too okay. I mean, he’s studying, he’s not doing drugs, he’s not drinking. Are you sure you didn’t do something else?”

Damon: “Elena, I took away his suffering.”
