So it looks like it’s true that Simon was only in the Detroit stadium to be caught on camera during the blackout because whoever this nefarious faction is, they wanted leverage to keep Simon in line. Janis finding the footage in the premiere seems to have been more coincidence than part of the plan.
I liked Vogel’s advice to Janis: don’t say no to killing Mark, and come up with “something big” to distract them. Telling her not to say no isn’t the same as telling her to kill Mark. The way it was played, with Vogel pushing her to get creative rather than back down at the last minute, actually made Vogel look competent. This show needs people who are actually competent.
Handsome Charming-Until-He’s-Not British Guy, a.k.a. Hellinger, doesn’t look old enough to be “Big Guy.” He looks about 35 (which is around the same age as the actor), and Raven River was shut down in the “late 80s.” Even if you push that to 1989, he couldn’t have been any older than 15, and Gabriel was likely older, or maybe around the same age if Callis is playing younger. Would Gabriel really have referred to someone around the same age or even younger as “Big Guy”? And I know that Simon was pulled into this craziness at a young age, too, but a) I don’t think he actually knew what he was involved in until his late teens or early 20s, and b) he was designing fancy towers and going to school, not helping to lead intense scientific experiments.
Other Stuff
-I could have done without Zoey pulling the same selfish bullshit with Dem that Olivia pulled with Mark. Was it really necessary to have two female characters behave this way? It’s like the show is inadvertently sending a message that most women put personal relationships above social responsibility, and most men do the opposite. It’s annoying, and that move bumped Zoey onto my “Dislike” list.
-It’s nice to have undeniable confirmation that Dem is the father of Janis’ baby, but the ambiguity seems to have been pointless. Both characters knew the truth about what went down, so keeping the audience in the dark was just gimmicky.
Quotes
Gabriel: “He told my mother he’d take care of me. He didn’t say it would be good care. It wasn’t. Olivia took good care of me at the hospital, and I got some new shoes. Do you like my new shoes? And I have huuuuge hippocampus, FYI.”
Mark: “Dyson Frost ran the experiments by himself? Was there anyone else?”
Gabriel: “Ohhhh… yes. The big guy. He’s the boss, Big Guy. You have his picture? I drew his picture—he’s very clean.
Vogel: “Does ‘big guy’ have a name?”
