Writers: Rafe Judkins and Lauren LeFranc
Grade: A+
I’m glad to see this show’s still got it. In many ways, this is what Season 3 should have been, and it’s sad that we would never have seen it if NBC hadn’t ordered six more episodes. Being left with the Shaw arc as a show-closer would have been devastating.
It’s a good thing that Zach and Yvonne have such great chemistry, because their easy warmth with each other helped them sell the joyful honeymoon phase. There were several little moments between them that I enjoyed, particularly Chuck scoffing at Sarah not having a favorite band, and the last shot of the two of them snuggled up in Chuck’s bed with Sarah in non-sexy PJs and minimal makeup. The writers get major bonus points for not breaking the two of them up by the end of the episode, and I hope they’re committed to letting them remain an item through the end of the season.
I was a little disappointed that Chuck and Sarah went for “Let’s run away together!” again, but at least Chuck rationalized leaving his family and friends this time. Plus we very shortly saw the flaw in their plan, which is that Chuck still has the Intersect in his head, and he’s too much of a good guy hero type to ignore his flashes. The same goes for Sarah—she’s a hero, and she can’t just turn that off.
I’ve been pretty unhappy with Ellie this season because all she seems to do is whine, usually about Chuck. I was once again ready to strangle her for doing just that, and furthermore, where does she get off saying she’s “never asked him for anything”? Right, Ellie, you only ask that your near-30 year old brother share everything with you, and freak out when you find out he hasn’t. BUT. She surprised me by actually forgiving him and acknowledging that he just missed a party. A going-away party, yes, but as far as she knows, he had a work-related issue, and she and Awesome are only going to Africa for a few weeks or months. So yay for Ellie seeing sense for once—it’s like the writer read my mind!
