Privileged, 1x13, “All About What Lies Beneath”

Episode Title: All About What Lies Beneath
Writer: Anna Fricke
Director: Liz Friedlander
Originally Aired: 01/06/2009
Grade: A-

This episode was mostly enjoyable and felt like a significant improvement over the last few episodes before the hiatus. Megan, in particular, was much more tolerable—her slipping on the satin sheets was a little too quirky-precious, but she didn’t make me want to grind my teeth once. Charlie distracting Megan about San Diego with the whale pamphlet was a very cute moment for both of them.

Mandy and Shelby were both more irritating than Megan in this episode (maybe that’s why Megan seemed so likable again…). Mandy’s assertion that she’s just as desirable as Megan as a college essay tutor because she “graduated high school” was completely idiotic (in fact, so is her entire psycho jealousy trip). Why on earth would Charlie choose the help of his high school graduate girlfriend over his best friend, who graduated from Yale with an English degree?! Well, because the girlfriend is a jealous, and apparently selfish, freak, I suppose.

Shelby’s admonition that “serious couples” don’t have spontaneous sex in public places was both out of line and complete bullshit. I really didn’t like it that Megan started to believe it, too. Yes, serious couples only have traditional bedroom sex, and that’s the standard we should all adhere to… Her attitude about coming back into Megan’s life was also pretty wacky, and I’m glad that Megan told her to back off and got a lot of anger and disappointment off her chest. As harsh as it was, Megan needed to say those things to her mother, and she handled it well afterward.

There were a couple of minor flaws in this episode, too. For one, I didn’t buy that Megan wouldn’t know what the Madonna/whore complex is. I knew what that was when I was younger than her… Also, Luis and Sage’s kiss was very clichéd, and I really didn’t feel much chemistry there, either. It felt uncomfortable and awkward.

And hello and goodbye to Marco’s boyfriend Keith (and their nice chemistry). I loved Marco having a storyline, but that aspect of it came and went awfully fast.
