Dollhouse, 2x05, “The Public Eye”

Episode Title: The Public Eye
Writer: Andrew Chambliss
Director: David Solomon
Originally Aired: 12/04/2009
Grade: C

I definitely thought this was the weaker of the two episodes—they gave way too much screen time to sub-par actors, and it grated. Stacey Scowley as Perrin's wife was truly awfulI've seen better acting in Skinemax naky movies. Seriously, casting agents, there's a reason why most of her IMDb credits consist of roles like "Waitress," "Pierced Eyebrow Girl," "Bullpen Nurse," "Blonde Wife," etc. Took all my willpower not to mute the TV every time she started talking.

Denisof wasn't really impressing me, either, to the point where I thought to myself, "Wow, Eliza is actually giving the best performance in this scene" when the Perrins and "Bree" had their little confrontation.

I wasn't really feeling Summer's performance in this episode, either, because I didn’t feel like she understood the words coming out of her mouth, especially the part about “living inside the human heart.” I think those monologues were just plain awkwardly written, though, and I warmed up to her in the next episode.

I sort of caught on to the white knight/damsel exchange being akin to "Do you trust me?"/"With my life," but I didn't really stop to think it through all the way, so Perrin being the doll was still a bit of a surprise.

I think they were going for a sort of ugly parallel with Cindy the handler being forced to sleep with the senator as part of her job, without the “luxury” of being programmed to like it, but I think I would have had more empathy if Cindy had been portrayed by a more capable actress.

Loved seeing Topher outside the Dollhousehe even came close to actual sunlight in the car!

Other Stuff

-How did the doll zapper get from Cindy’s luggage to Cindy’s hand in the middle of an LA street? She told her security guys to pack it, and they were travelling separately from her. Whatever, show!

Quotes

Echo/Bree: “I think her bad guys are badder than my bad guys!”
