Sons of Anarchy, 2x12, “The Culling”

Episode Title: The Culling
Writers: Kurt Sutter and Dave Erickson
Director: Gwyneth Horder-Payton
Originally Aired: 11/24/2009
Grade: A

I found Tara’s storyline interesting because I don’t think the Tara we saw at the hospital was necessarily “new.” I’m guessing that badass bitch has been lurking inside her all along and might even be leftover from a decade ago, before she left Charming (and Jax). Fear of letting out this tougher, darker side may even be why she didn’t attack the porn princess at the beginning of the season.

Also, am I supposed to care about the relationship between the cute Irish guy and Zobelle’s horrible daughter? I realize their relationship makes for easier exposition, because the writers can impart information about both the IRA and Zobelle when they’re together, but watching them make googly eyes at each other is nauseating. Not as nauseating as watching Zobelle play possibly-incestuous daddy with her, though…

Not a bad episode by any means, and in fact I found it quite enjoyable, but a) this episode was pretty clearly a setup for the finale, and b) anything that wasn’t setup was pretty straightforward and easily understood. With the finale already sitting on my DVR waiting to be watched, there’s not really much here that’s worth dissecting.
