True Blood, 1x03, “Mine”

Episode Title: Mine
Writer: Alan Ball
Director: John Dahl
Originally Aired: 09/21/2008
Grade: A

Bill let the vampire games at the beginning of the episode play out for quite a while before he put a stop to it. At first, I couldn’t imagine that he’s actually that apathetic or clueless, so I assumed he was making sure that Sookie got a good, long look into his world. Then he asked if he could kiss her at the end of the scene, and I found myself thinking that maybe he is that clueless...

The later conversation between Bill and Sookie about how he is “alive” and what animates him was very well done. We don’t get a real answer, but his point that he and Sookie are each animated by a different kind of “magic” made sense. His philosophy that “Just because you understand the mechanics of how something works doesn’t make it any less of a miracle” is one that I adhere to myself, and I think of it every time I look up at the moon.

Other Thoughts

-Tara and Sam hooking up was done in a way that was believable for both characters, and they definitely had some chemistry. The inevitable romantic/sexual complications are a bit soapy, so it’s a good thing this show is basically a soap opera anyway.

-As for the Sam-is-a-werewolf (werecollie?) theory, it seems not quite right since we saw him actually pet the dog in this episode. Maybe he’s a shapeshifter who chooses to take the form of that particular dog because people are already used to it and won’t question its presence.

-Lafayette may be as morally questionable as... any other such character on this show, but he's still awesome. He is, after all, responsible for Jason's ridiculous dancing.
