True Blood, 2x12, “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’”

Episode Title: Beyond Here Lies Nothin’
Writer: Alexander Woo
Director: Michael Cuesta
Originally Aired: 09/13/2009
Grade: B+

For a season finale, this was rather lackluster, but I never really believed they’d top “I Will Rise Up” this season anyway.

Sookie’s conversation with Maryann was just plain odd. There were too many moments in which Sookie sounded more calm and polite toward Maryann than she would to a distasteful customer at Merlotte’s, especially when she was explaining that she didn’t know anything about her own powers. This thing is wearing your grandmother’s wedding dress, has defiled your family home, and has brainwashed and used your friends! Polite conversation is not what’s called for here, Sookie!

Finishing off Maryann happened rather quickly, but the image of the magnificent white bull walking out of the darkness was quite possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen on this show, and it brought tears to my eyes the moment I saw it. It’s hard to argue with Sam being the one to kill her. Also, even though killing her may have happened fairly quickly, Tara was right that it’s not over yet. Eggs’ death will surely not be the only repercussion of Maryann’s meddling.

I didn’t find the scene between Eric and Sophie-Anne to be even remotely erotic. He looked like he might cry at any second, and she was reptilian. It’s actually kind of cool that her movements were reminiscent of a lunging snake, because that’s appropriate for a vampire, but if the director was actually going for erotic and sexy, that was pretty fail. Evan Rachel Wood licking Alexander Skargård’s fake fangs and slobbering in his mouth was just not sexy.

I did like seeing Eric so out of his element. Not only is she one of the few people he cannot predict, manipulate, or control, but he was so deeply uncomfortable for so many other reasons. The bright lighting, the fancy trappings, the sense of being "at court," the silly game of Yahtzee, the Queen's lack of respect for Godric's fate, and so on. It makes sense. He may be a good manipulator, and a snazzy dresser when he puts some effort in, but at heart, he’s still a coarse Viking, and not someone who would be comfortable playacting as part of her courtly retinue.

Even when he leaned up to try to kiss the Queen again, it felt like, "Ah, so this is what you wa--no? Okay. I guess we're back to playing Yahtzee..."

Eric told Sophie-Anne that he doesn’t “love humans,” but we know he told Lorena a few days ago that Sookie is more than human, which leads me to believe he’s doing that thing he does where he tries not to tell a lie by twisting the truth. Which is weird, because it indicates that Eric knows that he does love Sookie, and it seems a little early for him to be that self-aware of his feelings for her. I can certainly see him caring for her on a more personal level after what they shared with Godric, but love? Already?

As for Jason… what the fuck, writers? Just when I was starting to think Jason might have grown up juuuust enough to finally be a viable love interest for Tara next season, he had to go and not only blow her boyfriend’s brains out, but go along with Andy’s moronic idea of covering it up! There was absolutely nothing wrong with the way it really went down—Jason thought Eggs was attacking Andy and was trying to save his life. Stupid, stupid Jason, falling for Andy’s selfish attempt to take all the glory and be a “hero people know about.” It’s pointless to get excited about any sort of personal growth for Jason, because the writers will hit the reset button for him at the end of every season.

It’s way too easy an explanation for Eric to be behind Bill’s abduction, so I’m guessing that’s a red herring. Lorena is the most obvious contender, but again, it’s obvious and easy, and it seems too soon for Lorena to reappear. The fact that the person was wearing gloves may be a clue that it was a vamp, since a vampire would need to protect their skin from the silver, but it may have been a meaningless necessity in order to avoid giving away the gender of the abductor.

Overall, I wasn’t thrilled with this episode, but there were some decent scenes, and it was refreshing to find Sam completely awesome after feeling like he was an afterthought for most of the season.

Miscellaneous Stuff

-That stupid ostrich egg was just one more layer of Maryann’s batshit random craziness in trying to perfect her ritual to bring forth her imaginary God. On the one hand, I kind of like that, but on the other hand, I hate that it was used to close the previous episode.

-So… Sam is going to have sexy dreams about Bill now, yes? I won’t complain at all if we get a peek at one of them…

-I’m glad I got my wish for Sookie and Tara to clean Gran’s house together.

-I really hope Jessica’ dark phase is short and doesn’t end with her death.

-My immediate thought when I saw the ring Bill offered to Sookie was that it looked like Anna’s real engagement ring, from what I remember of the pic I saw. I didn’t look up the pic to see if that was the case, though.

Quotes

Jason: “It’s times like these that this town needs a good man, Andy. And that man… is us.”
