This felt largely like a filler episode, although there were some important moments. For one thing, Chuck got his Stanford degree! This means that new avenues of opportunity are open to him career-wise, and it also means that maybe he can get some closure on that period of his life and move on. We also saw that Sarah trusts in Chuck’s ability to save the day, and that Casey… does not.
And speaking of Chuck saving the day, I was irritated at first to see Chuck get to play the nerd hero once again. Even if Jeff had gone through with it and won the game of Missile Command himself, the whole thing was still Chuck’s idea and should have counted as Chuck saving the day. However, I eventually realized that by allowing Chuck to win the game of Missile Command and get the code, the writers created a situation in which Chuck was actually buoyed up by the accolades of strangers as he saved the day. To them he only won a game of Missile Command, but Chuck knew he just saved LA from disaster, and it must have felt nice to have people cheering him on as he did so and congratulating him afterward, even if they weren’t congratulating him for performing his spy duties.
Oh, and the guy who played Mr. Wu from Veronica Mars had a small role in this episode, which was written by former Mars writer Phil Klemmer. Coincidence? I think not!
